Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro platform
Find the symbol, size the order with the calculators, and set the exit at the same moment you set the entry.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
Open the Market Watch or symbol list and search for XAU/USD, not for gold by name, because the terminal quotes the metal by its code. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app the symbol behaves the same way: one standard lot is 100 ounces, and one pip is 0.01 on the quoted price.
Check the contract specification before your first order so you know the lot size, the pip size and the margin currency the platform will use. With a reference price near 4275.0, a one-pip move on 0.10 lots is a small cedi amount, which is exactly why the sizing has to be deliberate rather than guessed.
If the symbol does not appear, it is usually hidden rather than missing. Show all symbols in the list, then add XAU/USD to your favourites so it is one click away on the next session.
Sizing the order with our calculators
Size the order from the risk, not from the margin. Decide what a stop-out would cost you in cedis, convert that to dollars, and let our position size calculator turn it into a lot figure using the distance to your stop. The margin figure is a separate check: at the applicable cap, 0.10 lots of gold needs about $85.50 margin, so the position must fit both your risk and your free margin.
Use the pip value calculator to see what one pip is worth at your chosen lot size in your base currency, and the margin calculator to confirm the position fits before you click. The profit calculator then shows what the target is worth if it is reached, which is the number that tells you whether the trade is worth taking at all.
Write the lot size down before you open the order ticket. Sizing inside the ticket, with the price moving, is how a planned 0.10 lots becomes something larger than the risk you agreed to.
Setting the exit with the entry
Set the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not after the position is open. The stop is placed at the level that invalidates your reason for the trade, and the target at the level where the reward justifies the risk; both are decided from the chart before the order is sent.
The stop distance is what the position size calculator used, so changing the stop after sizing breaks the risk figure. If the chart moves and the stop has to move, resize the position rather than widening the stop and hoping.
Gold at a reference near 4275.0 moves in dollars, and a stop placed too close is removed by ordinary noise rather than by being wrong. Give the trade room that matches the volatility you can see, and let the calculators tell you what that room costs in cedis before you commit.
Finding the right XAU/USD symbol and why the list may show several gold entries
The correct symbol for spot gold on FxPro platforms is XAU/USD, but the Market Watch list can show more than one gold-related entry because brokers often list separate instruments for spot gold, gold futures or CFDs on gold with different contract specifications. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app, always confirm the symbol description and contract size before placing an order. The one you want for the reference price of about 4275.0 is the spot XAU/USD pair where 1 lot equals 100 oz.
Several gold entries appear because each symbol can represent a different product with its own trading conditions, including the contract size, the quote currency and the hours it trades. A symbol labelled XAU/USD may sit alongside a futures-based gold symbol or a gold index, and these are not interchangeable for margin or pip calculations. Check the specification window in your platform: the contract size should read 100 oz and the tick size should align with a pip of 0.01. If the specification differs, you are looking at a different instrument.
The right symbol is the one whose specification matches 100 oz per lot and a pip of 0.01, because that is the basis for the margin figure you may have seen: about $85.50 for a 0.10-lot position at the applicable leverage cap. If you select a gold symbol with a different contract size, that margin figure will not apply and your position sizing will be off. When in doubt, search for XAU/USD directly in the platform search box and verify the contract size before you trade.
The contract size behind one lot of XAU/USD
One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so a price move of one pip (0.01) on a 1.00-lot position changes the position value by $1.00. That contract size is fixed for the spot gold symbol and is the basis for all position sizing on the platform. If you trade 0.10 lots, you are trading 10 ounces, and a one-pip move is worth $0.10. The reference price of about 4275.0 means one lot has a notional value of roughly 4275.0 × 100 = $427,500.
The contract size determines how much margin you need and how much each pip is worth, so it must be checked before you size any order. At the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Ghana, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. That figure follows directly from the 100 oz contract size and the reference price; if you change the lot size, the margin changes proportionally. A 0.20-lot position would need roughly double that margin, and a 0.05-lot position roughly half.
The contract size also explains why gold positions can move quickly in cash terms: a $1.00 move in the gold price is 100 pips, so on a 0.10-lot position that is $10.00. Traders used to forex pip values often underestimate this. Before entering, confirm the contract size in the symbol specification and use the platform's calculator or your own arithmetic to see the pip value for your intended lot size. That step prevents oversized positions and makes the margin figure meaningful.
Setting a stop loss at the moment of entry instead of after the position is open
Set the stop loss in the order ticket before you click buy or sell, because doing so fixes your maximum loss at the moment of entry and removes the temptation to widen it later. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app, the order ticket includes a stop loss field that attaches the stop to the position as soon as it opens. If you enter first and add the stop afterwards, you expose the position to uncontrolled movement while you are still deciding where the stop should go.
The stop level should be based on the chart structure and your risk per trade, not on a round number or a guess. For XAU/USD, where one pip is 0.01 and one lot is 100 oz, calculate the pip distance to your stop and multiply by the pip value for your lot size to see the cash risk. At the applicable leverage cap, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin, but your stop distance determines the actual amount at risk, which should be a small fraction of your account.
Placing the stop at entry also makes the order ticket self-contained: entry, stop and take-profit are all set before the market can move against you. If the platform requires a minimum distance between entry and stop, the ticket will reject the order and you can adjust before any money is committed. This is especially useful in fast gold markets, where a delay of a few seconds can mean a materially worse fill. Treat the stop field as mandatory, not optional.
What the swap line means on a gold position held overnight
The swap line shows the amount credited or debited to your account when a position is held past the platform's daily rollover time, and for XAU/USD it reflects the cost of financing the notional gold exposure overnight. Because gold is traded on margin, holding a long or short position overnight involves a financing adjustment based on the difference between the two currencies involved and the broker's applicable rate. The swap is not a fixed number you can memorise; it depends on the broker's terms and can change.
On your statement, the swap appears as a separate line in the account currency, and it can be positive or negative depending on the direction of your position and the prevailing rates. For a 0.10-lot XAU/USD position, the swap is calculated on the 10 oz notional value, not on the margin of about $85.50. That distinction matters: a small margin requirement does not mean a small financing cost, because the swap is tied to the full position size. Check the swap rates in the platform specification before holding overnight.
The swap line is separate from spread and commission, so your total cost of holding a position includes it. If you plan to hold gold for more than a day, factor the swap into your expected return and be aware that Wednesday often carries a triple swap to account for the weekend. The exact swap rates are set by FxPro and can be found in the contract specifications; they are not a number we can state here. Review them before any multi-day trade.
How margin, leverage and the stop loss interact on a gold trade
Margin is the deposit required to open a position, leverage is the ratio that determines that deposit, and the stop loss is your risk control; they interact because a larger position uses more margin and makes each pip worth more, so the same stop distance costs more cash. At the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Ghana, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. That cap is a maximum, not a target: using less leverage leaves more free margin to absorb movement.
The stop loss does not change the margin requirement, but it does determine how much of your account is actually at risk. If your stop is 100 pips away on a 0.10-lot position, the cash risk is $10.00, while the margin tied up is about $85.50. A wider stop or a larger lot size increases the cash risk without necessarily increasing the margin by the same proportion. Always calculate both figures before entering, because margin tells you what you need to open the trade and the stop tells you what you could lose.
Free margin is what remains after the required margin is set aside, and it is the buffer that absorbs floating losses before a margin call. If you open several gold positions or use a large lot size relative to your account, free margin shrinks and a modest adverse move can trigger a stop-out. Keeping position size modest relative to your account and placing the stop at entry helps keep both the margin and the risk visible. The exact margin call level depends on the FxPro entity serving Ghana.
Reading the order ticket fields for XAU/USD before you confirm
The order ticket on MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app shows the symbol, lot size, entry price, stop loss, take profit and the estimated margin; reading each field before confirming prevents most sizing errors. For XAU/USD, confirm that the symbol is the spot gold pair with a contract size of 100 oz and that the lot size matches your plan. The ticket will show the margin required based on the applicable leverage cap, which for a 0.10-lot position is about $85.50.
The stop loss and take profit fields accept prices, not pip distances, so you need to convert your intended stop distance into a price level. With a pip of 0.01, a 100-pip stop is a $1.00 move in the gold price. If the reference price is about 4275.0, a long position with a 100-pip stop would have a stop price near 4274.0. Check that the ticket's calculated pip value matches your expectation for the lot size you entered.
The estimated margin field is not the same as your maximum loss; it is the amount set aside to hold the position. Your maximum loss is determined by the stop loss and the lot size. Before clicking confirm, verify that the margin shown is a small enough portion of your account that free margin remains comfortable, and that the stop loss is set. If any field is blank or looks wrong, cancel and re-enter the order rather than fixing it after execution.
