Funding and withdrawing from an FxPro account in Ghana
Money goes in and comes back by the same route, and the two costs that surprise people are conversion and the swap on an open gold position.
How money reaches the account
Deposits from Ghana are made by MTN Mobile Money, and the money is credited to the base currency you chose at account opening. If that base currency is not the cedi, the deposit is converted on the way in, and the rate applied is set by the provider handling the conversion rather than by anything you choose on the form.
Confirm your MTN Mobile Money line is registered in the same name as the trading account before you send. A deposit from a number or wallet registered to someone else is the most common reason a funding attempt is held, and it is the reason the verification page insists on matching names.
Send a test amount first and check that it lands in the base currency you expect. The habit costs you nothing but a little time and it tells you what the conversion actually did to your balance before a larger sum is exposed to the same treatment.
How money comes back
Withdrawals return by the route the money came in, so an MTN Mobile Money deposit is withdrawn back to MTN Mobile Money. That is why the wallet and the account must share a name, and why a verified account withdraws without the identity questions that an unverified one attracts.
The amount you can withdraw is your free margin, not your balance: money tied up as margin on an open gold position is not available until the position is closed. If you plan to withdraw, close or reduce the position first, and check free margin rather than balance before you submit the request.
Withdrawal requests are processed against the same conversion logic as deposits. If your base currency differs from the cedi you receive, the return leg is converted too, and the rate is again set by the provider rather than by the broker.
The two costs nobody counts
The first is conversion. Any time your deposit currency, your base currency and the currency of the instrument differ, a conversion happens, and its cost is embedded in the rate you are given rather than shown as a separate line. Keeping base currency aligned with the money you actually hold removes one of those conversions.
The second is the swap on an open XAU/USD position held overnight. Gold positions are financed, and the swap is charged or credited depending on direction and on the rates in force, so a position held for days carries a cost that a position closed the same day does not. Check the swap in the platform before you decide to hold.
Neither cost is a number we can quote for you here, because both depend on the provider and on the day. Our profit calculator lets you model a gold trade with the swap left out, so you can see the size of the gap you are accepting when you choose to hold overnight.
The Same-Name, Same-Method Rule Applies to Every Cedi You Send
Deposit and withdrawal accounts must match the account holder's name and use the same method in both directions, and no broker will bend this because it is an anti-money-laundering control rather than a customer-service preference. When you fund with MTN Mobile Money in your own name, the withdrawal returns to that same wallet, in that same name, so the money trail stays auditable from start to finish. A broker that let you deposit one way and withdraw to a third party would be unable to explain the flow to its regulator.
A mismatch is the single most common reason a withdrawal is held, and the fix is documentary rather than negotiable. If your MTN Mobile Money wallet is registered in a name that differs from your trading account, or if you fund from someone else's wallet, expect the request to be paused until you supply evidence linking the two. The rule protects you as much as the broker: it makes it harder for anyone to move funds through your identity. Treat the name on your Ghana card, your wallet and your trading account as one identity.
Practically, this means planning your funding route before your first deposit, not after your first profit. If you intend to withdraw to MTN Mobile Money, deposit from MTN Mobile Money, and make sure the wallet is registered to you. Mixing methods, or funding from a friend's wallet as a favour, creates a record that has to be unwound later, and unwinding it depends on what documentation you can produce. The clean route costs nothing extra and removes a whole category of delay.
Currency Conversion on Cedi Deposits and Who Takes a Cut
Your MTN Mobile Money deposit is in cedis, but a gold (XAU/USD) account is denominated in US dollars, so a conversion happens somewhere in the chain and someone charges for it. The cost is not a single published figure: it depends on the rate applied at the moment of conversion and on whether the conversion is done by the mobile money operator, the payment intermediary or the broker. What you can control is knowing that the conversion exists and checking the credited dollar amount against the cedi you sent.
The conversion rate you receive is rarely the mid-market rate you see quoted on a news site, and the gap between them is where the charge is hidden. That gap is not disclosed to us as a number here, and it varies with the route, so treat any quoted cedi amount as an estimate until the dollars land in the account. On a small test deposit the difference looks trivial; on a large one it is real money, and it is charged again when you withdraw back to cedis.
Because the conversion applies in both directions, a deposit and withdrawal round trip costs you twice, before any trading has happened. The honest way to judge it is to send a modest amount, note the cedi debited from your wallet and the dollars credited to the account, and compare. Do the same in reverse on withdrawal. That gives you your own effective rate for your own route, which is more useful than any general claim about how cheap or expensive a broker's conversion is.
What a Pending Withdrawal Is Actually Waiting On
A pending withdrawal is waiting on one of three things: identity or payment-method verification, an internal compliance check, or the payment rail itself. The status tells you the request has been received but not that funds have left. The first place to look is your inbox and the account's document section, because a missing proof of address or an unverified MTN Mobile Money wallet will hold the request indefinitely while the broker waits on you, not on the bank.
If your documents are complete, the wait is usually a compliance review rather than a technical failure. Withdrawals are screened against the deposit history, so a request that does not match the funding pattern, or a first withdrawal after a long dormant period, can be pulled for a manual look. This is normal and is not an accusation. The useful action is to respond quickly and completely when asked, since each round of questions restarts the clock.
The third cause sits outside the broker entirely: the mobile money or banking rail. A request marked as processed may still be in transit, and a wallet that is not registered, is at a limit, or has been inactive can reject an inbound credit. Confirm your MTN Mobile Money wallet is active and can receive the amount before you request it, and keep the reference number so you can trace the payment if it does not arrive.
Your First Deposit Should Be a Test of the Whole Route
Send a small first deposit specifically to test the entire route end to end, from your MTN Mobile Money wallet through conversion to the dollar balance in your trading account. The point is not to start trading size; it is to confirm the name matches, the conversion works, the credit appears, and you can see exactly what the trip cost. A small amount keeps the conversion charge proportionate while still exercising every step that a large deposit would.
Once the test deposit lands, verify three things before adding more: the credited dollar amount against the cedi you sent, the name and method recorded against the deposit, and whether any verification request appears. If something is wrong, it is far easier to resolve on a small sum. This is also the moment to confirm the margin figure you will actually face: at the applicable leverage cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, so a test balance should be sized with that in mind rather than deposited at random.
Treat the test as a rehearsal for the withdrawal too. A deposit that works but a withdrawal route that fails leaves you with money you cannot easily retrieve, so the test is only complete once you have confirmed the return path is open to the same name and method. Keep a note of dates, amounts and reference numbers from the first deposit; that record is what you will reach for if a later withdrawal is queried. One careful test replaces a lot of guesswork.
What a Deposit Costs Once Conversion Is Counted
A deposit costs the conversion spread plus any charge levied by the payment route, and both are separate from anything you pay to trade. The trading cost of gold (XAU/USD) is not part of the deposit; what you lose on the way in is the difference between the cedi debited and the dollars credited, valued at the rate actually applied. Because that rate and any route charge are not fixed numbers here, the only reliable figure is the one you measure on your own transaction.
Conversion is charged again on the way out, so the round trip is the honest unit of cost. If you deposit, trade briefly and withdraw, the two conversions can easily outweigh what you paid in trading costs, particularly on smaller amounts. This is why frequent small deposits and withdrawals are an expensive habit. Funding once with a planned amount, and withdrawing less often, reduces the number of times you cross the currency boundary and pay for the crossing.
There is also a timing element you influence. The rate applied depends on when the conversion executes, so a deposit made in a hurry during a volatile session may convert at a less favourable point than one made calmly. You cannot control the market, but you can avoid treating funding as an emergency. Size the deposit to your intended position and margin, note the effective rate you received, and compare it against your next transaction to see whether your route is behaving consistently.
Why the First Withdrawal Tests the Broker More Than the Deposit
The first withdrawal tests whether a broker actually returns money, which is a different question from whether it accepts it. Deposits are designed to be frictionless because they bring revenue in; withdrawals require the firm to verify, approve and release funds, and that is where process quality shows. A smooth first withdrawal, to the same name and method, in a reasonable time, tells you more about a broker than any deposit experience.
It also tests you. The first withdrawal is when mismatched names, unverified wallets and incomplete documents surface, often after months of trouble-free trading. Before you request it, confirm your MTN Mobile Money wallet is registered in your name, is active, and matches the details on the account. Check that your identification and address documents are current. Resolving these in advance turns a potentially stalled request into a routine one, and it is the same discipline the regulator expects a licensed firm to apply.
Finally, the first withdrawal calibrates your expectations for every one after it. Note how long verification took, how long the payment rail took, and what the cedi amount was against the dollars debited. That record is your baseline. If a later withdrawal takes markedly longer or arrives short, you will know it is a change rather than normal.
